Creating and maintaining a supply of emergency food is wise for the short term and long term. In the short term you save money by making your purchases at today’s prices. In the long term you know you have needed supplies to support you and your loved ones during any emergencies that cause a disruption in your normal food supply.
Many people bury their heads in the sand because they are afraid to consider the worse case scenario. However, wishing for a situation to not happen will not keep that situation from occurring. Focused planning can often mean the difference between emerging victorious or simply being a victim.
Creating a cache of emergency foods to ensure your survival is important. If you are aware of the many changes in politics, the economy, and changes in worldwide agricultural patterns then you must take action.
Crop failures in Russia and China, two countries that affect our nation’s economies, politics, and to a lesser extent our food sources contribute to the price of our consumer goods. Famines in Africa and nations such as Pakistan are to be watched closely. The lack of food contributes to reasons that cause countries to go to war.
While many experts differ on the specific reasons, collectively these same experts forecast an increase in the consumer price of our food commodities. Many companies are shrinking the volume of food products to keep the same prices that consumers have become accustomed to paying.
One of the primary ways to know if you are paying more for the same food goods is to watch the price of sugar, milk, and cereal. Increases in these staples normally indicate an increase in the price of other food products.
Most people think that a 3 day supply of food is all they will need in an emergency. However, if the lines of food distribution as disrupted by natural disasters such as tornadoes or floods, more than three days of food will probably be needed.
As a mimimum you should have a cache of one month of food for each person you want to see survive in a crisis. Also consider that you cannot eat the same food every day. Food fatigue is a very real problem. Besides simply being tired of the same foods on a daily basis, you also run the risk of losing nutrition that you normally get from a balanced diet.
Think of your food cache as a half circle and not a silo. The greater your variety, the greater your chances to survive dire circumstances. Also, plan for people with special needs. People who are diabetic or on low sodium diets must stick to their established diet routine as much as possible.
As mentioned, food shortages are occurring around the world at a rate never before seen. The supply and demand of food may shift normal distribution away from the grocery shelves that we are accustomed to being well stocked. There are no guarantees that grocery stores will maintain their normal level of food at prices we have become accustomed to.
The quality and quantity of food may suffer. However, if you plan now you can avoid the desperation that accompanies communities and countries when food is scarce. Keep in mind that during a crisis you want to maintain as much a level of comfort as you can. Ride the tide of change instead of being swamped by the changes. Live long and prosper.
