Bug Out Bags
Have you ever heard the term “bug out” as it applies to emergency situations. Bugging out is required if you have to get away from your present location without hesitation. Bugging out is a situation that is forced upon you. You can plan for bugging out situations by considering your health, your preparation, and whether or not you will bug out or with someone else.
Emergency survival requires constant preparation and being aware of constantly changing situations. Bugging out requires travel, whether by vehicle or by foot. You probably won’t have access to normal food outlets, at least don’t plan on eating at McDonalds or Burger King.
Maintaining a high calorie nutrient dense diet is possible. MREs ( meals ready to eat ), high density energy bars and portable water go a long way. Used for yourself or as a barter commodity, these items become increasingly important depending upon how the situation improves or deteriorates.
While some people don’t like MREs because of the weight and volume, a significant advantage of MREs is that they contain water and require minimal prepation before consumption. Fresh water may not be an option. However water stored for long term use in small eight ounce packets or even gallon containers can be a life saver. Water that is prepackaged is normally sterile water that can be used to flush wounds or clean your eyes.

The importance of organization can never be overstated. Whether your bug out supplies are arranged in a small kit, back pack or larger, knowing what is where and just as importantly in what quantities allows you to project what your needs are for the next hour or the next day. Additionally, in an emergency situation you do not want to expose your supplies to prying eyes.
The following is my recommendation of the essential items you should include in your bug out bag. While certainly not all inclusive, these items are too valuable to leave behind.
1) First aid kit
2) Tarp for shelter
3) Saw or hatchet
4) Rope or para-cord
5) A fire source
The ability to quietly and without notice acquire what you need helps to enhance your security. You want to maintain a low profile when you travel. While you are focused on your affairs you do not want other people’s eyes focused on you. Keep in mind that you can only be burdened by essential items, any items or items that you can do without for three days should be left out.
If your bug out method is load up your backpack, choose the best backpack you can afford. While you may be comfortable with a civilian style backpack, you might want to consider a military style instead. Your environment will determine how you should fit in. Predators in the form of individuals or gangs may be in your environment. It saddens me to say so but the stronger your profile, the greater the chance that predators will seek softer ( looking ) targets.
