Safe Water
Having clean water to drink in not a casual occurrence. Technology has allowed mankind to progress from simple rudimentary water purification techniques to highly complex water cleaning processes that are multilayered and constantly checked for quality control.
Water purification can occur at the industrial level serving millions of people in a community or inside a home with a family of four. Home purification systems are varied and satisfy different price ranges. And as with anything in life, you often get what you pay for. The trick is to know exactly what you are getting for the price as water is a precious commodity.
Cleanliness and good health cannot occur without clean drinking and potable water. I would like to offer some general suggestions on choosing water purification products.
Most of the water we drink is tap water from local rivers. What we drink normally is filtered and treated for various microbes, parasites, and other contaminants that we can’t see. The quality of tap water can vary from one community to another. In a report published by the Environmental Protection Agency 24% of public water systems had serious violations. These violations occurred in communities with public water treatment facilities.
As communities become more aware of safety and health concerns with public water systems, more and more people are taking a direct approach to ensure the safety of their family tap water. Sales of water filters continue to increase each year. Water filters are sold through multi level outlets, on line, and at retail outlets ranging from the local pharmacy to Wal-Mart.
Consumers can choose from simple inexpensive single person units to home units that can cost thousands of dollars. Regardless of the price and complexity of the water filter sold, each water filter properly used is an additional step towards increased water purity. As our bodies are composed of up to 87 % water, proper water nutrition is extremely important.
The Environmental Protection Agency sets standards for water treatment plants. However, many experts do not feel that the standards are adequately protecting the public interest. University studies suggest that water with high concentrations of chlorine may affect unborn babies. Of particular concern was the possibility of brain damage in infants.
There are 5 types of water systems.
1) Activated carbon filters
2) Cation exchange softeners.
3) Distillers
4) Reverse Osmosis
5) Ultraviolet Disinfection
These systems are used as either stand alone or combination systems. Each system has unique strengths that are increased when used in conjunction with each other. Another consideration is to check consumer guides, ratings and reviews. Water filters and replacement cartridges should have a National Sanitation Foundation rating. Certifications are only issued by the National Sanitation Foundation when a products passes their standards.
As there are over 2000 different chemicals found in tap water you must ask questions and review literature on what water purification system is the best for your budget. Buy the system appropriate for your situation. Don’t buy any systems unless they specifically target problems that exist in your drinking water.
One glass of water may not do you any immediate harm. The threat is in the cumulative effect upon your health. Your body can store increasing amounts of contaminants detrimental to your health. Don’t be afraid to contact your local water provider to ask questions about water safety. You deserve a clean safe cup of water every time you turn on the faucet.
